Parish Elder Ministry - The Difference Between a Pastoral and Socail Visit

Characteristics of the Social Visit:

  1. Discusses external events: weather, world or local events
  2. Maintains a congenial atmosphere at all times
  3. Comforts through avoidance of stressful subjects
  4. Shares stories and mutual experiences
  5. Is pleasant and positive
  6. Ignores negative feelings
  7. Is helpful by entertaining
  8. Discusses people “in general”

Characteristics of the Pastoral Visit:

 

  1. Concentrates on the person, their feelings, life experiences and problems
  2. Accepts painful feelings and tension areas
  3. Comforts through facing trials and difficult times in faith
  4. Helps the person share him/herself
  5. Establishes an understanding and empathetic environment
  6. Promotes a deeper, feeling level.
  7. Explores the relationship with God
  8. Examines other significant personal relationships
