- Concentrates on the person, their feelings, life experiences and problems
- Accepts painful feelings and tension areas
- Comforts through facing trials and difficult times in faith
- Helps the person share him/herself
- Establishes an understanding and empathetic environment
- Promotes a deeper, feeling level.
- Explores the relationship with God
- Examines other significant personal relationships
